Stan the Union Man calls in to talk about pensions in Florida... Phil Dine introduces his book that he said he wrote his book because people believe labor isn't releveant and he wants to change that... His book doesn't dwell on why labor is relevant, just points out the obvious truth and then explains how we can teach everyone else... The lack of media coverage with labor... "Labors biggest problem is that people aren't connecting the dots between that and whats happening to common people... what can labor do to reverse the lack of coverage?
1) Educate reporters when nothings happening about the relevance of Labor so next time something DOES happen they can fight their editor to cover it
2) Regionalize the outreach to the media when something is happen and have a real communications strategy
3) Humanize the movement! Many media outlets are looking for "real people" to talk about issues and who better than unions to provide those
Mention that the Employee Free Choice Act not promoted correctly... we were late out of the gate... just keep it simple and tell people how hard it is to organize... we go into specifics... the 2 major stereotypes we can go over... gives out his contact info to hear your stories...Ends by saying "It infuriates me when people say unions are a special interest... it's a national interest"
