The Union Edge Talk Radio Show’s “Women of Labor” Project.
03/22/2009 - 11:03am

The goal of this project will be to set aside one regular segment on The Union Edge Talk Radio Show to highlight a different union sister. The live, interview based style of the show will allow each woman to tell her union story on an individual, personal level. Interviewing a diverse cross section of women from various geographic locations, unions and vocations – at the rank and file level as well as those in leadership positions - will support the unions reaching out to a broad spectrum of “Not Yet Union” women of all ages.

The project’s efforts will strive to build an affinity between union and non-union women, focusing on their common values regardless of background and to counteract the negative union stereotype most often portrayed in the media. By presenting the positive aspects of union membership for women, the project will reach out to our “not yet union” sisters and daughters encouraging them to take steps to join.

The weekly segments will provide the opportunity for callers to ask questions of the featured guest, and music from some of the labor movement’s leading female artists will be played. The project, its progress and information on upcoming segments will be highlighted on The Union Edge Talk Radio Show’s website and Facebook page.  Podcasts of the shows will also be made available on the website for those who cannot listen during the live broadcasts.   We expect to be streaming live radio prior to the first interview, which will allow anyone in the world, with a computer and internet access to listen to the show.

Each segment will also be recorded and edited for the production of a set of audio CDs. A Women of Labor Handbook will be produced to go along with the CDs. This booklet will include a section on the history of women in the labor movement, brief descriptions of each guest’s story, their photograph and personalized messages from our union sisters to their “Not Yet Union” sisters and daughters. This book along with the accompanying CDs will be made available for purchase.
